Today, take a moment to reflect; even after seventy long years of India adopting the Constitution, how much of it are we adhering to? How much of a Republic have we truly become?
I listen intently, eyes shut tight
They say my country speaks at night
Of riots, of fires, of whispers and wails
Of how criminals can walk free on bail
While the families they have ruined
Are terrified to step out of the house at all
My country speaks of religion and caste
Of how long consequences of each can last
When what we eat and what we say
Bend us, break us, make us prey
To lynching by mobs, man slaughter by goons
Backed by ‘babas’ who are certified loons
Of Ayodhya and Babri, the settlement sore
Of Ram-Rahim feeling they each deserved more
Of fishing for votes by claiming Hanuman Dalit
And pampering the likes of Mehul, Mallya, and Lalit
Who after feeding on public naiveté
Like hungry vultures
Transform into sea gulls and circle foreign shores
My country talks of wedding extravagance and a royal guest list
And while the common man clenches his tired fist
Antilia grows another storey
While some other stories are silenced
On Twitter, at weddings, amidst crowded streets
And sometimes in the veranda of their own homes
‘It was a heart attack. He couldn’t make it to the hospital’
‘Go to Pakistan! Anti national!’
‘She deserved the bullet, she was too rational’
Intolerance, fabrication, pushing blame
Appropriation of an innocent’s name
My country talks of emotional hypocrisy
It scoffs when I say it’s still a democracy
CAA, NRC it points out to me
And asks if I still believe it is free
Free to call its children its own
Free to embrace love and love alone
From afar, a blood curdling scream
Pierces the silence, and disrupts my dream
My eyes fly open, I see them fight
I know now why my country can’t sleep at night

Writer's note:
I am aware today is the 26th of January and our patriotism is at its zenith. I am also aware my poem 'Soundscapes' might seem like a gulp of bitter medicine to some, difficult to swallow. However, I have never been the one to sugar coat things. And so it stands...start, brutal reality. Right in front of you in print. Recap of the decade gone by in poetic verse. Who said poetry was for the faint hearted?
“This post is a part of ‘DECADE Blog Hop’ #DecadeHop organized by #RRxMM Rashi Roy and Manas Mukul. The Event is sponsored by Glo and co-sponsored by Beyond The Box, Wedding Clap, The Colaba Store and Sanity Daily in association with authors Piyusha Vir and Richa S Mukherjee”
It was this decade hop that made me delve on all that we experienced together as a nation in the past decade. Initially, I wanted to write about all that India had achieved in the past decade (of course there was the Commonwealth Games, launch of the MoM - Mangalyaan operation, Scrapping of article 377, eradication of polio etc), but as I continued to jot down all that had happened year after year in the decade, I realized there was, spontaneously and unintentionally, a much longer list forming. A list of atrocities India was subjected to. A list of calamities it had faced. A list of struggles it had endured, of discrimination it had suffered, A list that could only make my head hang in shame.
Even right now, as you're reading this, the situation in our country is fraught with tension and strife. Dirty politics, blame games, smothering of the truth, media games.
As much as I tried to include the ‘good’ the decade had shown us, the terrible that we had to witness screamed out at me, as if it was India saying ‘Don’t you dare cushion the blow I had to suffer.’
And that is precisely how my poem 'Soundscapes' came to be written...
as a response to the innumerable sleepless nights and anxious days we faced together.
as a voice to awaken those who are asleep, oblivious of the struggle the less privileged are facing.
as a reminder of all that we fought and survived (and sometimes succumbed to).
You, who snore tonight, India is awake, struggling, sobbing, crying, protesting...but nevertheless, hoping. Still hoping. Forever hoping...
For a new tomorrow...
where we will regain all that we have lost, that India will truly become a sovereign democratic republic, and secure to all its citizens Justice; social, economic, and political; Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship; Equality of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity of the nation.
On that note, I remain...
Worried yet hopeful,
An Indian

I do relate with the worried yet hopeful Indian, Priyanka. Though the country is growing in many aspects, accomplishing missions but the roots are weakening. We are still in the foul cry of morals by faith, gender, religion, color, and whatnot.
Though this post is bitter but don't we need a bitter pill of better health.

Appreciate this post. Will try it out.
While I empathize with you for your concern, I beg to disagree with your line of analysis! The facts that you have stated are correct but lining them like this somehow seems like that there is a preconceived notion. I would not like to comment whther the country is at a zenith or nadir as my awareness level is pretyy low, I am pretty sure that the country has faced much worse and come out ever stronger! So this time too, its like an adverse wind that just tosses a ship but the ship braves on regardless!! Regards - Pallavi Acharya
This is so so powerful. It is like an eye opener . I liked the way you hav enot sugar coated your words because this is the damn reality of our country.Hovever much we try to refute, but the situation remains fragile .Hope the next decade bring some happiness and peace to all of us !!
Poetry and poetic prose, loved reading this, one suggestion from oldies like me bigger font please :)
One coin, two sides. Poetry has never been for the faint-hearted, I suppose. 'Heartbreak' and 'dark' poetry wouldn't thrive otherwise. ;)
Best wishes. :)
Since morning these thoughts about the Republic Day and where we are after a decade or seven, had been haunting me. Your post just echoed my thoughts and just like you I'm a worried but hooeful indian.may God make us saner in 2020. Lovely post and thank you for putting this down
Priyanka, we are at a threshold where we have everything but have also lost everything. We have technology in our hands but fear engulfs our hearts.we are free also in chains. When and how things are going to change, I don't know. But I too have hope....
Janaki(beyond the familiar)
I loved your poem. You did right by reminding that there were calamities struggle and discrimination too. We cannot shut our eyes and say all's well. Your expression is flawless. Amazingly worded.
Much love
Deepika
We do need the liberty of thought! How beautifully you have penned down all the changes through elegant words. Loved the third line so much. Of fires, of whispers, of wails, ohh, how beautiful! Best wishes for ur life ahead :)
Priyankaa.. ur lovely poem touched my heart and made my day. beautiful lines, "Now i know why my country cant sleep at night." it is the hard reality of our times and u did complete justice by throwing light on sensitive issues of the country."
This is lovely - You have very aptly portrayed the state of our country and recapped everything significant in the past decade via poetry.
Hope India regains all it has lost
A very thought provoking post, Priyanka. The state of turmoil not only in India but the world as a whole is disturbing.
Let's hope the next decade will be kinder.
Cheers
Meena from balconysunrise.wordpress.com
Wow-what a rhythmic summary of the decade gone by and the harsh truth of India. The title is so apt.
Yes, we are worried, we are afraid but still feels to say I'm proud to be an Indian, With a hope for better and positive tomorrow.
Hi Priyanka
Well, yes. You have encapsulated well the journey of the country in the past decade. Yes, it's worrisome but then as you have added yourself, there have been some highs too. However, it's almost always about what weighs heavier. But I am hopeful and I think we will make it through!
Wow! You wrote the current reality of the country very gracefully. What's going on in the country in the name of the region and Caste, you portrayed beautifully. Constitution gives the proper right to every citizen. That's the beauty of a democratic country like India. The government should maintain the feel.
Deepika Mishra
While we are all fretting or beaming on our own growth stories, you have brought me back to the ground realities of the circumstances we are living in. Of the country that we are shaping for our kids to thrive or survive in. Very thought provoking words.
Priyanka!! What a poem!! I have no adequate words to express what I felt while reading this superbly penned post! You seem to have covered it all and your angst is palpable.
Really happy to be associated with writers like you through this bloghop!
Wonderful national take on the decade gone by Priyanka. Really admirable. The country needs awakening as we have just lost it.
Prose and poetry together.
This was a very hard hitting post of the decade.
Really worth couple of claps.
Such a beautiful poem covering a range of events..It was a great intrepration of the prompt.. It was a touching poem..
This has been on my mind too for so long now ! Don't understand which direction we are heading too. Ruchi Nasa https://thevagabond.me
Awesome Priyanka :)
The lines I liked most:
"Who after feeding on public naiveté
Like hungry vultures
Transform into sea gulls and circle foreign shores"
I am really glad Priyanka that you had selected the subject that is need of an hour..indeed India has gone through various changes ( both positive and negative) in last passing decade and you had refelected these amazingly through your poem. yes, it is true that our nations is facing various problems ranging from women's condition to corruption. hope things will change for better in upcoming decade. one of the best response to theme of blog hop.
Very thought provoking poem on this important day! Hope we in India wake up!
Poetry is definitely not for the faint hearted. Poetry stands as much for admiring and relishing the beauty of the world as for pointing out its flaws. This poem reminded me of a group I used to be a part of called I am not a silent poet and it would have fit in perfectly with the voices there.
Perfect just perfect the bitter medicine should work I pray my friend happy republic day😊
The nearest thing I could think of while reading your verse cum post was Pink Floyd! A surreal adventure! Universal emotions! And bold thoughts! More power to your pen! Rohit Verma
The piece is raw, jagged and woven with a hundred tears. I was so moved and impressed that you're able to communicate so many complex layers into one heartrending poem.
Very well done! May India see a more unified and peaceful 2020!
Wow!! After reading your poem all the topics we had let go in the past decade come to forefront. Indeed our country is crying, sobbing and struggling. May the new decade see a new India where everyone is unified and stand strong.
Interesting write up indeed, you have covered so many issues...
Poem revealing the inside truth of India. Hoping to get a better india tomorrow!!
Strong voice and honest depiction... liked it Priyanka
A poetic and thought-provoking take on the current state of affairs. I hope India is going to tide over this as it has in previous times.
A poetic and thought-provoking take on the current state of affairs. I hope India is going to tide over this as it has over previous occasions.
What an honest post from a worried yet hopeful Indian. I think so far this is the best take on the prompt. It takes a lot of courage to speak up and not sugar coat things and that is precisely what you have done. The intolerance in our country really bothers me and when the politicians use it to their advantage, it really aggravates the matter. I hope the younger generation understands and has the courage to fight this and make India a better and beautiful country.
I loved the way how you brought out all the social and political issues through your words. I just hope and pray things to improve. :(
The poetic way to talk about the state of current affairs is surely a unique way. An interesting read!
Whatever be the situation, together we always find a way.
Wow. This is the most patriotic post I have read this year. My chest filled with pride and I even felt slightly burdened with the responsibility that I have to carry. Thanks for such a wonderful post.
Wow, what a patriotic post or should I say Poem it is. I think you read my mind while watching the RD parade and wrote this poem, as I was also just thinking along these lines and wishing for a more peaceful and happy decade next for us
That's strong poetry about the various Indian issues . Some achievements but many atrocities too . Nirbhaya , Unnao , CAB , Malya , chandrayaan and many others. Let's hope the new decade brings more positivity
You echoed my thoughts completely. It is very sad to see the current situation of our country and you have penned it so realistically. I really hope and wish this decade brings a ray of hope and prosperity to our nation - Vartika
You have shared a very thought provoking and insightful write-up! I hope we see a better India soon and leave a legacy for our kids that they are proud of.
-Prerna
A poem is the best way to portray your emotions. You have concluded all your fears yet hopeful dreams in the perfect way.
Wish you loads of luck
wonderful poem . I wish to see better and beautiful India . proud
A wonderful poem! loved it
Your poem was a little overwhelming and strong. I wouldn't say that its a lot, but your poem showed one part of the decade, but there is also a tender and happy part of this decade that we saw.
-- rightpurchasing
Manisha - A nice way to put forth the situations in the country however so many issues and with so many perspectives. I sincerely wish that our country excels in the next decade we have the potential and we shall. I hope for the best!
That last line is so powerful. Whether we know it or not, our country is going through a watershed moment.
In beautiful lines you have summed up what the country has gone through the last decade. We have accomplished in many ways but yes, our values and culture is getting eroded day by day. In spite of all the worries you have given the readers a hope for better and unified India.
@ Pragnya
Thanks Pragnya. I have always believed in the power of honesty. Bitter though it may sound, acknowledging our defects is the first step to move forwards.
@ Anonymous
Err...I don’t really know what you mean by ‘try it out’. But thanks for the appreciation. :)
@ Pallavi Acharya
No preconceived notions here. My reactions/responses are entirely based on the truth we have witnessed. Of course, we are not here to compare losses from one decade to another. Because evolving as a society means improving our past mistakes rather than using them as a benchmark to feel we are doing better.
As for the ship, even the ‘Titanic’ had that kind of confidence. And we all know what happened...
Nevertheless, hope springs eternal! :)
@ Anjali Naik
Thanks Anjali. We live in hope! :)
@ Pooja Priyamvada
Thanks for dropping by, Pooja. Will try and work on the font. :)

@ Janaki
Indeed, Janaki. We all need to keep that hope alive and resurrect our lost solidarity.
It’s only when we stand united that India can become the better nation we all are hoping for...
@ Deepika
Thanks Deepika. You’re right. We have turned a blind eye to what’s been happening for way too long.
It’s time the Indian in us awakens and takes things in his hands. It’s time we restore our nation’s identity as a true sovereign democratic republic!
@ Swarnali Nath
Thanks Swarnali. I am glad you conform and relate to the feelings behind this post.
Love and best wishes to you too.
@ Supriti
Thanks Supriti. :)
I hope we live to see a more united India. The socialist, secular, democratic republic our Constitution wanted it to be...
@ Sonam
Thank you, Sonam. :)
We live in hope!
@ Meena Chatty
Amen to that! :)
@ Pr@gun
True! In fact, it is the pride and love that we hold for our nation that makes us hope for a better tomorrow.
But we need to acknowledge our flaws and improve upon them rather than defend them. That is the only way to show we care.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your views! :)
@ Sonia Dogra
Indeed, Sonia. We hope, therefore we are! :)
@ Deepika Misra
Thank you, Deepika.
I hope and pray our country sees better days. :)
@ Anupriya
Thank you, Anupriya.
I think we all need a reality check every once in a while. Makes us reflect upon our responsibility towards our country and fellow countrymen.
@ Radhika Acharya
Thank you, Radhika. The feeling is mutual—it’s lovely to connect with people who care and conform.
A civil exchange of views (whether similar or differing) is always welcome. And I am thankful to this #decade hop for that. :)
@ Harjeet Kaur
Sadly, true! :(
I hope our India sees better days soon...
Thanks for dropping by! :)
@ Romila
Thank you, Romila. :)
I thought this was a topic that needed to be addressed, especially in the times we are living in...
@ Unknown

@ Cucco
I think every Indian (worth his salt) is worried about where we are heading as a nation. I only hope we aren’t heading south!
@ Garg Ankit
Thank you, Ankit. :)
@ Surbhi Prapanna
Thanks, Surbhi. :)
I thought this topic needed to be addressed. And what better occasion than on Republic Day.
The hop was an added bonus and ensured a wider reach...

Thanks for stopping by my space.
@ Sivaranjani

@ Pavi Raman
Thank you for the kind words, Pavi. I am touched that the emotions behind the poem were able to reach you. Only goes to show you feel just as strongly about the topic.
From one worried Indian to another, let’s hope things turn for the better soon!

Thanks for stopping by. :)
@ Jyotirmoy Sarkar
Thank you.
@ Jyoti
We live in hope!
@ Arushi Seth
Thanks for the kind words, Arushi.
Yes, change can be brought about only if and when we (as Indians irrespective of caste, creed, religion, and economic disparity) stand united, in solidarity, and resilient to forces that have been trying to thwart our constitutional rights to equality, fraternity, and secularity.
@ Shalini
Thanks Shalini.
I hope so too.
@ Dishki
Thanks Dishki.
Staying united is the only way forward...
I hope we can achieve that (secular) state very soon.
@ Maheshsowani
Thanks for the kind words, Mahesh.
I am proud to be an Indian, and it is only my love for my country that is making me see hope even in dismal times.
After all, ‘Sare jahaan se accha, Hindustan Humana ’ :)
@ Suhavijay
Ah, thank you. I think this is a concern plaguing the mind of every aware Indian, and I am glad we conform!
I believe acknowledging the problem is half the battle won. :)
@ Monika
Indeed! I hope the social, political, and economic situation in India sees more highs than lows this time around.
@ Vartika
Thanks Vartika. I am glad we conform!
@ Prerna Wahi
Thanks Prerna. I hope so too.
Let’s build an a India that our future generations will be proud of (or at least not be ashamed of).
I wish more people would understand and reflect upon the future consequences of what is happening right now.
@ Geethica
Thanks Geethica. :)
India too needs luck right now. And a bit of compassion, equality, and secularism too!
@ Swathi
Amen! :)
@ Vidhya Thakkar
Thank you.
@ Rightchasepurchasing
Yes, I agree. But like I mentioned in the note, are those ‘tender and happy times’ strong enough to forget the extent of the atrocity, inequality, and injustice that India endured?
Our nation is being ripped apart. And in times like these, it’s tough to count your blessings/achievements.
@ Manisha
I hope so too.
Our country and country men have immense potential. And even if India is not in the best of conditions right now, I do believe it will rise again!
@ Damyanti
I agree. We are at the brink of a turning point.
I only hope we make a turn for the better!
@ Debidutta Mohanty
Thanks Debidutta. Through my poem, I wished to draw attention to what we had lost in the past (decade) and what we need to attain in the future to restore the India our Constitution promised us,
And although we have failed ourselves as a nation, we still have hope.
The time to act and stay united (in and against all that is happening) is NOW!
This bitter pill is a much-needed medicine for the scores of hypnotised masses. Kudos to you for voicing all our concerns out loud. I’ve been slow with my reading for this blog hop, and I am delighted to see that others are also raising their voices against the awful condition of our country, through this blog hop.
Noor Anand Chawla
You have portrayed a very nice way about the past decade about our country. In fact, your post reminds me of the time when I got stuck in curfew at my home in December 2019.
I wish I could express myself like this! Emotions with apt vocabulary! Yes... the nation has to undergo changes, when there are mixed feelings, things will turn sour! I appreciate your post for its simplicity and direct connect it made!
A grim reminder of the decade gone by. Loved how you used humor to blunt the edges.
Mayuri/Sirimiri
I have always been an admirer of your thoughts and how you give a voice to them. Ur creatives show so much passion towards the things you care. I do not know about other poems but ur poems are surely not for faint-hearted. I really applaud you for this creative piece of yours. You have summed up many happenings of this decade within our country beautifully.
I can understand your viewpoint but let us not deny the good things as well. For every shadow there is a light. M not a poetic person nor m I the one who tracks all the happenings of events... but I strongly believe in being hopeful.
Instead of believing that my country has sleepless nights, i would say that my country is more aware. This phase of turmoil and chaos is temporary and transitional. It is a breakthrough for better things to come.
We cannot deny the bad but let us not forget the good as well.
Let my country not have sleepless nights... let my country awake..
#readbypreetispanorama
appreciate the poetry though differ slightly on the views. all democracies have a right of centre and left of centre politics. This happens quite frequently in europe as well.
Dark poetry is a genre that is tough to write and tougher to understand and accept. I agree things have been very rough but India has seen lot worse in the past and I truly believe we'll get through this together too.
Hope that the next decade has a longer list of achievements to boast of!
This was the most honest post I have read in recent times from a worried Indian for her country. I loved the poem you added in the beginning. I also loved this line, India is awake, struggling, sobbing, crying, protesting...but nevertheless, hoping. Still hoping. Forever hoping...We know the situation in our country is not something we should feel proud of and it's the right time to voice our thoughts, the thoughts of a common man. Thanks for writing this post.
Well thought and presented. It is a good one. I would suggest try sending it to some newspaper or magazine. It could be a sure hit. I really mean it 🙂
Pashhmeena..

@ a lady lawyer aka Noor
Thanks dear. I was happy to read your post on the current CAA situation. Fiction though it may be, you expressed your stand openly and bravely.
Kudos to you too!
@ Priyal
Thanks Priyal. I am sorry my post reminded you of a terrible time. But I guess we all need to be constantly reminded in order to brin about a change...
The problem with us, Indians, is that we forget too easily! :(
@ Srishti
Thank you, Srishti. I am glad we conform! :)
@ Deliciously Alice / Mayuri
Umm...black humour, maybe? Although I doubt if I can ever see the humour in this current situation of ours...
Thanks for stopping by!
@ Preeti Negi
Thanks for the kind words, Preeti. Like I mentioned in my footnote, hope springs eternal...despite allege odds we have faced or are facing.
I love your positivity and fervently hope that this phase is a transitional one and we see better times soon.
Towards a brighter future! :)
@ Lavanya
This poem is not politically inclined. It is country inclined (the last decade saw two different Governments).
To simply put it, the ‘left’ and ‘right’ does not matter, as long as the country is marching ‘ahead’... :)
@ Varsh
I hope so too! :)
@ Neha Sharma
And thank you for understanding and taking it in the right spirit. :)
After all, the only way to move forward is to acknowledge our shortcomings (as a nation) and improve upon them!
@ Maya
Thank you, Maya. Be it news paper, magazine, or blog, I am glad my feelings found a voice that you conform with. :)
@Anonymous/Un’nown/Paschhmeena
I’m really sorry you had to go through this, Pashhmeena. It (notification mail in quadruplets) has never happened before though, so I have no idea how to fix it. Will still try and find a way to unsubscribe you.
Have you tried logging into your ID (the one you used earlier) again and unticking the box?
Brilliant, a poem on current situations!
Yes the country is changing and these events are causing us go negative about the same country which gives us our identity. When I compare the situation with other counties, I feel we are still better place. Growing economy and in better hands. I also see people doing selective criticism and gimmicks to disturb the atmosphere. While I have a different take on CAA and other current burning issues, I still feel people do an early judgment despite being educated.
I loved the way you have infused the hard hitting truth in a subtle and poetic way.
That's the hard hitting reality and not everyone is capable of voicing it out so strongly. Hats off to you for choosing to write on a topic that everyone has a opinion but don't know how to put forth their voices. Glad to have you in this blog hop :)
Thanks for stopping by, Shipra.
However, IMO, education has little to do with the reaction/response of the common junta. If it did, we would not be having so many educatrd illiterates supporting the wrong cause only on the basis of their blind faith and jingoistic attitude.
As for the comparison with 'selective' other countries, it is time we stopped comparing ourselves to the least common denominator. It is only through introspection and addressal of issues that we can move ahead.some.may call it criticism, others reflection! :)
Thanks Zens2cents. I am glad we conform! :)
Thank you, Rashi. I am delighted to be a part of this #DecadeHop too. You have been a wonderful host yourself, selflessly staying behind the scenes and yet being there everytime you are needed.
You inspire!:)
